What Is PodcastCodex? A Player That Knows Where You Are
PodcastCodex is an iOS podcast player for audio dramas, serialized fiction, and narrative history, with a spoiler-safe story codex gated to your exact position in the show.

Serialized audio is bigger than ever. An audio drama can run for ten seasons, and a narrative history show can spend forty episodes inside one dynasty. Somewhere around episode thirty, a familiar feeling sets in: you remember the betrayal, but not who committed it. You recognize a name in the dialogue, but not why it matters. A side character from the second season walks back on stage and the show clearly expects recognition, while you are quietly wondering if this person is new. Most podcast apps treat every show as a feed: a queue, a play button, maybe show notes. Nothing helps you carry the context that makes a long story worth following.
PodcastCodex is built around one idea: your podcast player should remember the story the way you do, and no further. For supported shows, it keeps a codex of characters, places, and terms that is gated to your exact playback position. Think of it as a wiki for the show you are hearing, but a wiki that only ever knows what you have already heard. That last part is the whole trick. A fan wiki can tell you who the masked envoy really is because it was written by people who finished the series. The codex cannot, because it only unlocks entries for the moments before your playhead.
A real podcast player first
None of the story tools matter if the player is not worth living in, so PodcastCodex is a complete daily driver. Add shows by RSS URL or directory search, stream or download episodes with a storage cap you control, and pick up exactly where you left off with background playback and lock screen controls. Automatic cleanup removes played episodes so a downloaded season never eats your storage after you finish it.
Listen, follow, remember
Listen with context
The Now Playing screen carries an In This Scene strip that stays live to your position, so the names on screen are always the ones in your ears right now.
Follow the transcript
A timestamped transcript highlights as you listen and lets you scrub and search the episode text directly.
Remember everything
The codex tracks characters, places, and terms per show, each entry tied to the moment it first matters, with recaps that rebuild your context after a break.
The codex is gated to your playhead
Open a show's codex and you browse its encyclopedia: every character, place, and term the show has named so far. The core rule is simple: an entry only reveals what the show has narrated before your current position. Ten episodes in means ten episodes' worth of knowledge, never what the wiki knows. When a name resurfaces after a hundred episodes, the answer you get is the answer that is safe for where you are.
Coming back to a long series after weeks away is the other half of the problem. The Previously On recap summarizes everything before your playhead, so you re-enter the story in a minute instead of re-listening to old episodes or gambling on a fan wiki.
Codex coverage is produced by server-side analysis of public podcast episodes, so it improves over time without any work on your phone. Shows without a codex yet still play perfectly: PodcastCodex is a normal, full-featured podcast player for everything in your library, codex or not. Private and paywalled feeds you add by URL stay on your device and are never sent for analysis.

Who is PodcastCodex for?
PodcastCodex is a good fit if you are
- An audio drama listener following multi-season fiction shows
- A serialized fiction fan who loses track of large casts
- A narrative history listener keeping rulers, factions, and places straight
- A commuter who returns to long shows after days or weeks away
- Someone who wants story answers without risking spoilers on a wiki
It is just as fair to say where it does not fit. PodcastCodex does not host or sell shows: it plays public RSS feeds like any player, and the publishers keep their audiences. Interview, news, and panel podcasts are out of scope by design; the codex exists for narrative shows. And it is iOS only for now.
First questions, answered
Does the codex spoil ahead?
No. Every entry is gated to your playback position. An entry knows only what the show has narrated before your playhead, and unlocking more of it happens automatically as you listen.
Do I need an account?
No. Add shows by RSS or directory search and start listening. There is no sign up and no email.
What if my show has no codex yet?
It plays like any episode in any good podcast player, and you can wish for codex coverage inside the app. Wishes are how coverage is prioritized.
How do purchases work?
Sample five episodes of a supported show free, then unlock that show with a one-time purchase, or take the monthly plan for the whole catalog. Everything is billed by Apple and restorable on any device with your Apple ID.
Start with a show you already love and listen to the first five episodes with the codex on. The opening arc is the fastest way to feel what position-gated entries do.
PodcastCodex is free to try on the App Store. Add a serialized show, press play, and let the codex keep up.
